This sampler was most likely stitched sometime between 1865-1875, during the time that President Lincoln was a household name. Perhaps the tall gentleman in the stovepipe hat is a nod to him, as he also had a favorite walking stick. You'll enjoy seeing the original sampler photo in this pattern, as Martha added a few extra stitches to one of the borders and the original framer covered that little extension right up!
